I can tell that we are gonna be friends

Alright.

It is official.

Summer always makes me feel like a giddy school girl.

My window is open and my candle is lit…I am sooo looking forward to summer…except I am already starting to get allergies…buuuuut I think it is worth it haha…

I had to remove like 6 blankets from my bed because I started getting too hot at night...so that’s always an exciting thing…

I’m looking forward to bike rides and evening runs and kayaking on the lake…

Summer camps (yes, plural)!! And just hanging out and being goofy with my youth girls!!

I have decided to declare this summer – “The Summer of Love”

Yep. I can do that. I am sure I have some special royal ancestor back in that family tree somewhere!

We don’t have to fall INLOVE…who knows…maybe that will happen, but I digress.

I just want to spend my time loving on people!!! And just BEING THERE for people!

Doing this study with the girls has made me see how much they are just starving for TRUE friendship!!! They want those genuine, tough friends who honest with them even when it’s brutally painful!

So BE THAT FRIEND!!!

A few weeks ago I talked about community with the girls! And I brought up the “Be a Barnabas…pursue a Paul…train a Timothy”

Most of the girls have a Paul and a Timothy in their life…but hardly any of them seemed to have a Barnabas or even BE a Barnabas to someone else!!! And it made me so sad! We all NEED someone to walk along side us and encourage us and ask us the hard questions and make us feel accepted and safe…someone who needs us to do that for them just as much as we need them to do that for us!

If there is someone in your life who has encouraged you in some way then tell them!

One thing I am learning is just how important it is to show those around us how much we care about them.

Do something special for them! Go out of your way to show them you care!

Go to coffee with someone you haven’t talked to in awhile!

Or make a new friend!

Find someone to get to know and just go for it!

Call an old friend up to see how they are doing! (please don’t text them or facebook them…….that is the most impersonal thing ever……..)

ACTUALLY MAKE AN EFFORT to show them they mean something to you!!!

I feel like we are such an awkward generation…no one knows how to have meaningful face-to-face conversations anymore…(yeah I am one to talk…someone who has a blog! Haha) but you know what I mean! We go out with a group of friends and everyone is sitting there on their phones through the whole meal…..sooooooooooooo rude!

No one knows how to really TALK and COMMUNICATE anymore…

So learn how!!!

We are all made for community.

I know it is hard to get to know people and trust them enough to let them in – especially if you have been hurt before…but just pray about it and God will bring you an incredible friend. Just remember you have to BE a friend to have a friend!

I will not boast in anything.

It has been far too long.

I have been writing a lot lately…just not here – obviously.

But I miss you…oh sweet blog of mine…

This last Thursday was the first of 8 lessons that I am teaching for the high school girls. And so far – I am absolutely loving it!

God is giving me so much joy through it all.

I couldn’t find a book that I wanted to teach out of, so I decided to write my own lesson for the girls…

I guess I am kind of picky that way…but it had to be perfect. I have never been one to live well off of other peoples words…sure, I love quotes and songs and wisdom that other people have to offer…I just mean…when I get caught up on something that my heart needs to say…it has to be my heart that says it by golly! And by my heart, of course, I mean whatever God is placing on it.

The lesson is on God’s love. Each week focuses on a different thing that He gives us because of His love for us…maybe I will post the lessons some time…I have thought about doing that…but I dunno…we will see I guess.

This next Thursday’s lesson focuses on forgiveness. I have been going through the New Testament finding passage after passage talking about how we are no longer under the law because of Christ’s death and resurrection…and then Ephesians 2 popped into my head…

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live... Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:1-9

I feel like this is the very first time I have heard verse 9…”not by works, so that no one can boast.”

We aren’t under the law anymore…so that no one can boast.

The Pharisees were basically considered to be the most "righteous” of all people…because they lived by the law…but their “righteousness” was just arrogance and pride in disguise. When Christ came to earth, they thought they didn’t need Him because they had it “all together.” They were perfect in their eyes and they didn’t need a savior because they could save themselves through their works.

What if Christ never came?

What if we still had to “save ourselves” through our works? I struggle with just getting  my thoughts in order… and James talks about how self desires give birth to sin…how could I ever get my actions right if I can’t even straighten up my thoughts?

Through writing this study – I have really been learning how to give God all of the glory and credit.

Don’t get me wrong – it is extremely difficult – since I am a person who loves the lime-light! I just love being praised for my good deeds! My mentor and I joke constantly (because her and I are so similar) about how we should just always have a spotlight shining down on us because we are so awesome. Of course WE KNOW that it is nothing that we do…we only joke about it because we know that we are both so self-centered…and God gave us a sense of humor…

But I know that this is all by the amazing grace of God.

I am so incredibly thankful that Christ died for me.

I never want to be a Pharisee.

I never want to think that I can do anything and everything myself and that I don’t need God.

I never want to develop the attitude that I got this all figured out and He can just take a back seat because I know just where I am going…

Those thoughts really scare me sometimes…because I know that if I truly WERE the one in control…I would only lead myself down a road of destruction…and since I am a youth leader…I would most likely have a bus load of girls with me…

PRAISE GOD I am NOT in control!!!!!!!!

PRAISE GOD that I NEED HIM!!!!

EVERY OUNCE OF ME NEEDS HIM!!!!

I was DEAD in my “transgressions and sins”

I DESERVED WRATH!!!

But “because of his great love” for me… “God, who is rich in mercy,” made me “alive with Christ”

And God “RAISED US UP WITH CHRIST and SEATED US WITH HIM in the HEAVENLY REALMS IN CHRIST JESUS”!!!!!

This is not because of anything that I have done or ever CAN do!!! It is solely because God LOVES ME!!! And He WANTS ME with Him!!!

And NO ONE can ever boast about being “good” enough because “ALL HAVE SINNED and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Anything GOOD in me comes from God – it is a GIFT from God!

“So that NO ONE can boast”

Not only has He given me goodHe has raised me up with Christ and seated me with Him in the heavenly realms…I don’t even think my mind can comprehend just HOW GOOD God TRULY is to me…

“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
Galatians 6:14

Praise God for His grace…

Worldly smarts or pure hearts?

School is finally done! That’s right – as of right now…you are reading the words written by a college graduate! (thank you, thank you!)

I am beyond excited.

But also nervous.

I thought for so long that I wanted to go on to get my Masters. I was so career driven that it really was the only thing I let my mind get set on for a very long time…but now I am not so sure.

I know that counseling is the area that I am most interested in. And my heart is most filled with joy when I am working with teenage girls, because I know that that desire was placed in me by God.

And for so long I just wanted to get my Masters and then my PhD and eventually open up my own Christian counseling office…I was just so career oriented. And it was hard for me to see that I can accomplish what I want to accomplish and live just how I want to live and do the things I most desire to do, without having those titles and spending all of that time in school.

But then my dad said something to me the other night that really caught my attention…

He was reminding me that I can have all of the knowledge and book smarts in the world, but if I don’t have the heart behind it, then it all means nothing.

Then tonight my mom said to me (a quote she picked up somewhere along the way):

“No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Sometimes, I will admit…that I might have this arrogance about me.

It is a common thing for people who have knowledge and are educated. Once you know one thing – you tend to think you know everything…right? Or is that just me……..

It’s an annoying trait about me…and I try – when talking to people about “psychology issues” to be so aware of how I am coming off…because I never want someone to think that I think that I “know it all” just because I have been educated in a certain area.

Because it’s true…I can know the “book answers” to every thing…but unless God has given me the discernment and wisdom about someone or an issue or even Him…then all my time studying and researching means squat!

So if furthering my education just means that I will only become more and more arrogant along the way…then no thanks…I’d rather stick to refining and polishing this heart of love and humility that God has given me.

There are two things that God has really given me a heart for. And the other day a pretty exciting/amazing opportunity arose involving one of those things.

I would love to write out the whole entire story on here of how everything went down…but who knows how long that would take…

All I can say is – God is amazing. And incredible. And mysterious. And surprising…

I was about to make a big decision. And I prayed to God…I reminded Him of the two things that He gave me a desire for – and I told Him to open doors.

James says that a man who prays with doubting is like a “wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” He says that this man is a “double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1: 6,8)

I have always known of the desires that God has given me…but I have always allowed my insecurities to over take me and fill me with doubt about how “qualified” I am to live out these desires.

I have read James so many times…it is my favorite book in the New Testament. So recently, I decided to do a study on it…

How many times have I read chapter 1 verse 8…? “…he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” I would say probably at least 10…since that is probably how many times I have read the book.

“he is a DOUBLE-MINDED man, unstable in all his ways.”

“he is a double-minded man, UNSTABLE in all his ways.”

“he is a double-minded man, unstable in ALL his ways.”

“he is a DOUBLE-MINDED man, UNSTABLE in ALL his ways.”

He is not just unstable in what he is doubting…he is unstable in ALL of his ways…

Because he knows the instructions that God has clearly given him to – yet he continues to doubt.

“he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

This hit me so hard.

Like I said…for so long I have known OF the desires that God has given me…and I have lived them out to an extent...but more than living them out fearlessly…I have allowed insecurities to slush the tools that God has given me…feeding the belief that I do not have what it takes.

I AM a double-minded man. Unstable in ALL of my ways…

Because I have not been consistent with what God has told me.

I have recognized the desires and gifts He has given me…and I have prayed that He would let me use them…but while praying these very prayers…I would allow my mind to be clouded with doubt.

And it’s not me that I am doubting…

It is God…and His promise He has given me what I need in order to do the things He has told me to do.

“…For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord…” (vs. 7)

I’m not setting boundaries for myself…I’m setting them for God.

Thank God He cannot be confined or restricted.

So…as I was saying…

I was about to make a big decision. And I prayed to God…I reminded Him of the two things that He gave me a desire for – and I told Him to open doors.

Keeping in mind that I should not doubt because God has given me these desires. I prayed for discernment and wisdom. And I prayed that God would give me these desires.

I prayed for confidence in Him and trust and faith that He would keep His promises.

And the very next day, the phone rang – a phone call inviting me to partake in one of the very things that I had prayed to God for.

I’m not saying that if you pray a prayer that God is going to magically give you everything you want…but I know for a fact God places desires in us and if we trust in Him and seek Him – He will be faithful to us and open doors and work in ways that we never imagined.

So I don’t know what I am doing. I don’t know for certain where I will be tomorrow, a few months from now…or a few years from now. But I know that God is taking me on an adventure and He is giving me everything I need along the way.

My point is – don’t allow yourself to become discouraged if you feel that you have been called to a place and think you are lacking what you need.

Don’t for one second – allow Satan into fooling you that God has not provided you with what it takes to do what God has called you to do.

And don’t be afraid to confront God. He has given us these gifts to use for a reason – and if we ask Him, He will provide a way for us to use them.

God can and will use you no matter where you are at. Don’t be so focused on getting where you’re going that you never stop to take a look at where you are at…

I have been listening to a lot of Rend Collective Experiment lately…I really love their lyrics to the song “Broken Bread”…:

May I be broken bread, may I be poured out wine
May I incarnate, Your kindness Lord

Your will done Your way

Spend my life Jesus, anyway You please
Whether on great things, or what seems small

Your will done your way
Your will done your way
Your will done your way

I will not fight You
Take me past the line that my heart draws
I will not fight You
Take me beyond the laziness of my thoughts
I will not fight
Lead me further than I've gone before
I will not fight You
I'm abandoned to Your call

Your will done Your way

Do not let there be, any part of me
That's untouchable, unreachable

Let my delight be, living out Your dreams
Washing dirty feet, and kissing Yours

Your will done Your way

God let Your dreams come true, dream through us
God let Your dreams come true through us

“Woe be to the soul who tries to head in any other direction once that call has come to him.”
